The Rivierenbuurt in Amsterdam-Zuid is part of Plan Zuid by H.P. Berlage. Plan Zuid is divided into several parts: the Apollobuurt and Stadionbuurt, aimed at the wealthy, middle class and working class, and the Rivierenbuurt, aimed at the middle class. The Rivierenbuurt was built in the 1920s and 1930s. The urban plan envisaged that three main streets (Amstellaans) cut through the neighborhood in a Y-shape and converge on Daniël Willinkplein, named after the Dutch writer Daniël Willink (1676-1722). These were the Amstellaan, Noorder Amstellaan and Zuider Amstellaan. The other street names in the area were named after Dutch rivers. Notable exceptions are the Uithoornstraat, which was named after the mooring place on the Amsteldijk of the skipper from Uithoorn, and the Borssenburgplein and street, which were named after a former country estate on the Amsteldijk, which was demolished in 1866.

Since 1916, the following tram lines have traveled through the district for shorter or longer periods of time: 4, 5, 5A, 7, 8, 11 (event line), 12, 20, 25 and S. Lines 4 and 12 still run through the Rivierenbuurt.
The Remise Lekstraat (built 1927-'29) of the GVB (Amsterdam) is located on the Kromme Mijdrechtstraat/Lekstraat.
